Sir Stanley, c. 1845
Note from the Archivist
When I was approached by the Presidents of the SRS to help research and document the life of Sir Stanley Rawlinson, I confess that I was surprised. As one of Britain's pre-eminent scholars of Victorian parliamentary imbroglio, I was of course aware of Sir Stanley, his feuds, his oratory contribution, and his minimal impact as a government minister. However, I was embarrassingly ignorant of the breadth of experience that shaped the man, the marks he had on history, and of the impact he had in later life. Like many others, I could not see why he would warrant his own archivist, much less a society dedicated to his memory.
However, I admit I was wrong. The SRS has kindly opened up its archives to me, and through my researches across wider official and unofficial collections, as well as some of the many letters penned by Sir Stanley himself to which the Society have given me access, I have been able to piece together parts of the life of this most remarkable of men.
As senior archivist at Wrexham University, I have only been able to commit to this project on a part-time discretionary basis, and my research is very much ongoing. This site is therefore to be considered a work in progress, with chapters of Sir Stanley's life still under research, and others incomplete. I shall be incorporating new information as it becomes available, to allow all fellow Rawlinsonians out there to study, appreciate and spread the appreciation of this remarkable figure of Victorian history.
